LLT09: Responses & Reflection

I’d like to hear others’ thoughts about this year’s Learning, Libraries + Technology conference.

Here are some potential prompts:

  • What sessions did you attend? What did you think of them?
  • Was there any technique/technology/idea that has stuck in your mind that you might consider implementing in a course?
  • If you were there for the keynote on Monday, what did you think of Michael Wesch’s presentation?
  • Did you find Wesch’s statistics about YouTube astonishing? (In short, YouTube has generated more video content in 6 months than 4 major tv networks have since they came into existence).
  • What did you make of Wesch’s argument that old models of education (information is above comment/discussion, scarcity of information, authority of the teacher) have been shaken?
  • Anything else come to mind?

I really am intrigued by the Softchalk software and the possibilities that it has especially because of its integration to ANGEL.

I LOVED the keynote from Monday. He is pretty inovative and challenged to look at students and problems in a ne way.

I really liked Michael Wesch’s presentation but I felt he didn’t address the hard work of assessment. He had some off-hand comments slamming long multiple choice tests and I agree that many classes are stuck in a “multiple choice scantron” mindset.

However, there is a lot out there for new ideas of assessment and I didn’t get to see his take on that.

For example, after he set his class off into the world of creating wikis and completing a research project, how does he take that all into consideration when grading a student?

For better or worse, we have a grading scale that will be with us for quite some time (it’s systematic up and down our entire educational infrastructure) and so whenever we assign things we need to have a method of, as fairly as possible, measuring student performance and learning.
